First: no one is canon, well maybe "Richard" Fitzwilliam. Elizabeth is close... almost... not quite.Second: this is long. Long. There could have been some slimming. I'm not saying half, but maybe less than a quarter could have been edited out. With only a few proofreading errors that I could remember (long).Third: because it was long, I had some points where I thought there might be inconsistencies. However, I was not motivated to check.It was mainly Fitzwilliam Darcy's 3rd person POV. But there were several times when it switched to another male POV. Again, because it was long, I couldn't remember if any female POV's occurred, much less Elizabeth's.There are three parts of the story. The first was Fitzwilliam Darcy's childhood and how he had to "deal with" Wickham and Darcy Sr. The second was E and her sisters' conflict with their parents. The third was Fitzwilliam Darcy's conflict with his father. The romance of ODC was never in conflict and they got together fairly quickly after meeting. Caroline and Collins were bit players. Ann dB died early in the book. So lots of changes in the timeline. Also, the Bennets had a son. So introduced characters.This really wasn't a romance, even though (almost) everyone got paired off. This was dealing with trauma and conflict (along with drug addiction) with bad parents. Consequently ODC never really doubted themselves. They were mostly confident in how the perceived what was right.For me, the best part was the disectionand confrontation of a manipulator's words.I didn't love it but I didn't hate it.Maybe I'd read it again but it's not on that list. This is not really a P&P variation since there is no real attempt to keep the characters “in character”. it’s simply a hodge podge of people, with familiar and somewhat familiar names, brought together by a plot that attempts to invoke a story out of injustice. Stories like these, which place the development of character over and independent of environment miss the point. Places are as important as people. For example, Pemberley is relegated to simply ‘an estate’ whereas it is a cultural and historical hegemonic pinnacle with advantages and disadvantages in the development of its people. The story touches on mental health but much in the same way as racism and other forms of discrimination and vile behaviour can be attributed to that reasoning over rational, independent culpability and change, which is ironic, since that is one of the core themes of canon. The story started well in provoking frustration at the injustice meted out to Fitzwilliam Darcy by his father at the behest of George Wickham. Soon however, that plot point begins to flag and then, as the story started to pull further and further away from canon, it started to get more and more uninteresting, requiring outlandishly more and more exaggerated and out of character representation of canon characters. A very sad outcome. The author’s writing ability is good but it is wasted here. Two stars. Would not recommend.
